Summer 2007
Outer Banks, NC
The Bodie Island Lighthouse was built in 1872 in the vicinity of Bodie Island on the Outer Banks in North Carolina. The 156-foot tall lighthouse is one of only a dozen remaining tall, brick tower lighthouses in the United States — and one of the few with an original first-order Fresnel lens to cast its light.
Saffo was awarded the project in 2012 to help rehabilitate the lighthouse and remediate the lead-based paint that was on the structure. The scope of work included painting of all metal surfaces, both interior and exterior, including the beautiful spiraling staircase that rises 120 feet, exterior brick and interior brick, all existing windows, doors, walls, ceilings and replacing the windows in the Tower and Oil House. Extreme caution was taken to preserve the historic structure while work was performed. Saffo scaffolded both the interior and exterior to gain access and utilized a walnut shell to remove the coating on the lighthouse due to the age of the structure.
